Introduction: Rheumatic heart disease still remains one of the leading causes of congestive heart failure and death owing to valvular pathologies, in developing countries. Valve replacement still remains the treatment of choice in such patients. The aim of this study wasto analyze the postoperative outcome of double valve replacement (Mitral and Aortic ) in patients of rheumatic heart disease. ...
متن کاملReoperation for a patient 25 years after a Starr-Edwards ball mitral valve was installed.
A 45-year-old female suffered from increasing dyspnea during exercise and edema of lower extremities from January 2000. She had undergone mitral valve replacement with Starr-Edwards ball prosthesis (model 6320) due to mitral valve regurgitation 25 years ago. The cardiac catheterization and echocardiography documented mitral, aortic and tricuspid valves regurgitation grade III. Left ventricular ...
متن کاملChronic hemolysis following fascia lata and Starr-Edwards aortic valve replacement.
Sixty-two patients were investigated for chronic intravascular hemolysis from 3 months to 6iS years following aortic valve replacement; 27 patients had Starr-Edwards prostheses and 35 fascia lata grafts. The findings are suggestive of a significantly higher incidence and degree of hemolysis in patients with Starr-Edwards prostheses compared to those with fascia lata grafts. In both groups regur...
متن کاملThrombotic obstruction of the Björk-Shiley valve: the Glasgow experience.
Thrombotic obstruction is the most feared complication of the Björk-Shiley tilting disc prosthesis. From 1971 to 1982 1186 Björk-Shiley valves were implanted in 900 patients. There were 93 deaths in hospital. Eight hundred and seven patients have been followed for a total of 4146 patient years; 14 patients were lost to follow up. Nineteen cases of thrombotic obstruction were identified at necro...
متن کاملDoppler echocardiographic characteristics of normal and dysfunctioning prosthetic valves in the tricuspid and mitral position.
The Doppler echocardiographic characteristics of 70 prosthetic valves in 35 patients are reported. Twenty nine patients had a Björk-Shiley prosthesis in both mitral and tricuspid positions and six had Carpentier-Edwards valves in both sites. Five of the patients had abnormal tricuspid prostheses on the basis of clinical and echocardiographic criteria. Pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography was us...
